Why Experience Matters When Choosing a Madison Birth Doula

Shopping for a birth doula is a little weird. You’re basically interviewing someone to hang out with you on one of the biggest days of your life. No pressure. You scroll through websites. Everyone has beautiful photos. Everyone says they’re compassionate. Everyone loves “empowering” families. Everyone has a cozy couch and a cup of tea in at least one picture. So how do you know who to choose? Well…I’m a little biased. I think experience matters. Not because newer doulas aren’t wonderful. I love newer doulas! They bring a lot to the table. Not because they don’t care. But because babies have a remarkable talent for ignoring everyone’s plans.

You spend nine months preparing. You take the classes. You pack the perfect hospital bag (I can help you with that). You organize tiny baby clothes by size. You write a birth plan. Your baby looks at all of that and says, “Cute.” Then labor starts two weeks early. Or ten days late. Or lasts forever. Or goes so fast you barely have time to finish checking into the hospital. Babies are unpredictable little people from day one, it’s honestly impressive.

As a Madison birth doula, I’ve supported families through labor and birth for more than 30 years. I’ve attended over 1,000 births in hospitals, birth centers, and homes, and every single one has taught me something. People sometimes ask if I still get nervous. Honestly, not really. Curious? Absolutely. Every birth is different. But nervous? No. I’ve learned that birth is incredibly normal…and completely unpredictable. Those two things somehow exist at the same time. I’ve seen babies arrive exactly according to plan. I’ve also seen babies completely rewrite the script halfway through Act Two.

One thing experience gives you is perspective. When labor suddenly changes, the room often changes too. People might start moving faster. Machines might start making noises – I am an expert at explaining those noises. Someone says words you’ve never heard before. Parents immediately wonder, “Should I be worried?” Sometimes the answer is yes. A lot of the time? It’s simply birth doing birth things. An experienced doula has seen those moments before. They aren’t panicking because labor took an unexpected turn. They are helping you stay grounded, understand what’s happening, and remember to ask questions when you need answers. Sometimes the calmest person in the room becomes the one everyone else unconsciously follows.

At 2:17 in the morning, Google has some very interesting opinions. Unfortunately, Google has never actually stood in a labor room. Experience teaches you things that don’t fit neatly into a search result. Like when someone just needs reassurance. When changing positions is worth trying. When your partner desperately needs someone to remind them they’ve been holding the same granola bar for three hours without taking a bite.

One of the biggest myths about doulas is that we march into the hospital acting like we own the place. Absolutely not. I’m not there to replace your partner. I’m not there to argue with your nurse. I’m not there to tell your doctor or midwife how to do their job, nobody wants that. I’m there to support you. Sometimes that means suggesting a different position. Sometimes it means helping you understand your options. Sometimes it means quietly reminding your partner that they’re doing a great job too. And occasionally… It means finding the phone charger that somehow disappeared into another dimension.

People sometimes assume that after more than three decades I’ve seen it all. I haven’t. Babies are endlessly creative. Just when I think I’ve witnessed every possible labor scenario… A baby says, “Hold my diaper.” And does something completely new. Birth has a wonderful way of keeping all of us humble.

Because when things don’t go exactly according to plan—and let’s be honest, birth loves a plot twist—you deserve someone beside you who isn’t surprised by every twist. Someone who knows that birth can be messy. I have left the hospital many times with body fluids all over my clothes. I learned to bring at least two sets – and a couple pair of underwear. Because wearing the water birth tub water soaks through everything. It can be loud – totally normal. I am pretty sure the entire floor could hear me give birth to my last child. It can be emotional. It can be funny. Sometimes all in the same hour. As a Madison birth doula, my goal isn’t to make your birth look a certain way. My goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident, whether your birth includes an epidural, an unmedicated labor, an induction, a planned cesarean, or a change of plans you never saw coming. Experience doesn’t guarantee a perfect birth. Nothing does. But it does mean you have someone beside you who’s seen enough to know that most detours are simply part of the journey—and who knows when it’s time to offer a suggestion, hand you a sip of water, crack a well-timed joke, or simply sit quietly and remind you that you’re stronger than you think.

If you’re looking for an experienced Madison birth doula, I’d love to meet you. We’ll talk about your hopes, your concerns, and how I can support you throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and those first precious hours with your baby. Because birth may not go exactly according to plan… But you don’t have to navigate it alone.
